At Silver Spring United Methodist Church, we live into our mission of feeding people body, mind, and spirit at many levels in our community. We partner with a number of organizations to help meet both immediate needs and to work for changes to unjust practices and systems. Please visit our food ministries page to learn more about these programs that are at the core of our work in our neighborhood.
Our Partners in Mission
Action In Montgomery (AIM). We are a supporter of the work of AIM, an inter-faith, citizen-based, non-partisan, social justice organization whose purpose is to advance quality of life in Montgomery County and support it elsewhere in the region. AIM’s mission is to build a base of power so that citizens can influence the institutions that affect their lives. AIM engages congregation leaders in developing an agenda around issues that directly impact their lives.
Angel Tree. Every year we participate in a holiday outreach project that provides gifts for children in Maryland’s foster care system at Christmas.
Appalachia Service Project. In 2017, the SSUMC high school youth took their first trip to serve with ASP. ASP serves communities all across West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina and assists residents in poverty to keep them warm, safe, and dry. We love ASP’s commitment to meet people where they are and to serve those most in need in these underserved areas. asphome.org
Harvest of Hope. SSUMC has sent multiple youth mission teams to help harvest crops left over in farmer’s fields. Farmers donate the crops to area food banks. Harvest of Hope rescues food by the ton and gets millions of servings of fresh produce to food banks every year! endhunger.org/
House of Divine Guidance Shelter. In 2017, SSUMC first hosted this rotating emergency winter shelter, serving women and children experiencing homeless in the DC metro area. We are fortunate to have a building suitable for helping with this vital service. houseofdivineguidance.org/
Institute of Grace (Haiti). Institute of Grace provides educational opportunities and health care to Haitians in Port-au-Prince, Delmas, and Merger. We have sent teams of volunteers to assist in this work, as well as donations and supplies. instituteofgrace.org/.
Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON). A regional office provides free, high-quality, legal services to immigrants in our congregations and communities. We appreciate their support of the community and their participation in outreach events.
Ministries United Silver Spring / Takoma Park (MUSST). We are a member congregation of MUSST, a faith-based, interdenominational organization that provides emergency financial assistance low-income people living in the lower Silver Spring / Takoma Park area to prevent eviction, utility cut-off, and help pay for medical prescriptions.
Scouts. Numerous girl and boy scout troops meet at the church campuses. We are proud to host all of them, but Troop 209 is among the oldest, active Boy Scout Troops in the Washington, DC area. Stop by the front lawn during October for their fantastic pumpkin patch!
SHELTER (India). This program provides housing, medical care, education, and other resources to orphans in Chennai, India suffering from HIV/AIDS. As a Christian organization, SHELTER struggles to compete for funding necessary to providing these life-sustaining services for children. Watch a short video about this program here.
Silver Spring Interfaith Housing Coalition. We are a member congregation of the Silver Spring Interfaith Housing Coalition (SSIHC), a nonprofit organization of local congregations working together to provide housing opportunities in our neighborhoods for low income families and individuals. ssihc.org
The Thrift Shop. The Thrift Shop provides good and better quality used clothes and housewares at affordable prices. The Thrift Shop is open Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The shop is located on the lower floor of our campus.
UMD Wesley Foundation. The University of Maryland Wesley Foundation is a community of college students in nearby College Park. In addition to sharing their musical gifts with us during worship once or twice throughout the school year, students volunteer regularly at the Choice Pantry. We are thrilled to help support this community of faithful college students. umdmethodists.org
Volunteers in Mission. The United Methodist Church’s short-term mission program. We organize service trips from time to time and in the past we have traveled to Appalachia, Louisiana, Nicaragua, Mexico, Haiti, and Memphis to work and learn through United Methodist mission projects.
