Silver Spring UMC Youth Group
Fall 2020 is a weird season for all of us, but we are making the best of what virtual youth group this Fall can be! Starting September 13, youth ages 6th-12th grade are invited to meet from 5-6pm on Sunday evenings for a little social time and for reading and exploring Bible stories together. The stories we’re reading this Fall are all about “unraveling” – people in the Bible whose lives, plans, hopes, feelings, expectations, etc. unraveled before their eyes – and what they did about it. The connection to the present moment is obvious, I hope.
Meeting ID: 834 8767 3206 Passcode: 8900
We’ll use breakout rooms to keep middle and high schoolers in separate groups for their discussions – though we’ll do some large group games and prayer time too. And stay tuned for a few game nights and maybe a socially distanced creek clean up down the road this semester as well.
The other key part of our programming this fall is some devotional creative projects that I’ve prepped for you. If you haven’t picked up a youth group goodie bag with supplies in it yet, email Jen to get connected with one! I’ve made videos of how to do the projects and my ideas for different ways to turn them into ways to reflect and grow in your faith, which you can find below. Do these on your own time, when you need a brain break or something creative to help you relax and find a centering.
See below for our “normal” types of programming
The youth group meets once a week, September through May. Our meeting times vary, depending on the activity planned and whether it’s a middle school meeting, a high school meeting, or a combined event! Our regular meetings consist of games, creative reflection, devotions, Bible study, fellowship, and much more. We also plan retreats, service projects, fundraisers, lock-ins, and fun trips to amusement parks and other attractions. Our youth are also encouraged to be active in the ministries of the church. They participate in worship as liturgists, scripture readers, acolytes, crucifers, and ushers. They also volunteer at Vacation Bible School and participate in summer mission trips. We welcome all youth who are in grades 6-12 to participate! We strive to create an inclusive and supportive community where youth can explore the relationships between themselves, God, and the world. Also, we play a lot of cards.
For more information regarding any youth ministry opportunity, contact Jen Kidwell, Director of Youth and Adult Discipleship at email@example.com.
Middle School Sunday School Class
During the school year, this group meets on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month during the 11am service, on non-special event Sundays. We use a curriculum designed to introduce or reinforce topics also covered in confirmation.
This group is open to any middle school youth who has not yet been confirmed. We meet weekly from January-June on a day and time that is set by participating families. In 2018, that was 4-5pm on Sunday afternoons; in 2017 and 2019 that was 9:30-10:45am on Sundays. In confirmation, youth have the opportunity to claim the questions and learn the practices of a life of faith. They are encouraged to explore what church membership means to them and to decide whether and how to embrace that for themselves.
8th grade and up
Starting November 2017, on the third Sunday of the month, we host an 8th grade and up Unplugged Worship service at 11am in Room 22 (basement level). This service is led by some young adults and includes some reflection, communion, and prayer time for this lovely group of teenagers!
