The Building Beloved Community Committee (BBCC) has compiled, adopted, and submitted a report to the Baltimore Washington Conference (BWC) of the United Methodist Church which lays out the need for the affordable housing development on our campus, the importance of our concurrent and future church remodeling plans, and provides specific information on community and church needs, the project’s design, costs, and financing plans. Church members who have not yet received a registration link to obtain the report, or who would prefer to see it in printed form, should contact belovedcommunity@silverspringumcp.org. The report is being reviewed by the BWC’s Central Maryland District Superintendent and the District Board of Church Buildings and Locations, and is expected to be approved.

Over the next month, the BBCC will offer informal engagement sessions with the congregation to answer questions about the report in anticipation of a charge conference which is scheduled for Sunday, March 16 at 11:30am. At that conference, professing and associate members of Silver Spring United Methodist Church will vote on the preliminary plans for the housing development and church renovation. Members must be present in person to vote.

If the congregation approves the plans, the development project will enter a new phase. The proposed design will be used to begin securing funding, determining compliance with county zoning requirements, and conducting the normal entitlements required by local and state law for residential development, including but not limited to stormwater and environmental surveys, traffic studies, school impact studies, and other required civil engineering activities.

The BBCC will continue to meet monthly, working closely with our development partners through every phase of the project, and keeping the congregation informed and engaged.  Questions? Email us at belovedcommunity@silverspringumcp.org.
